Gibraltar |
||||||||||||||||||||
| Gibraltar is less than an hours drive away and well worth a visit for the tax free shopping and mix of cultures, resulting in many interesting finds. But, at 135 million years old and fought over for possession, its history is the prime lure, and a tour of the island, complete with inquisitive monkeys and fascinating caves and tunnels is a must. Gibraltar is a British overseas territory, which borders Spain to the North and overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar. Significant historically for Britain and Spain, and has a Royal Navy Base there. It predominately is a rock in which the inhabitants live mainly along the bottom.
View across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco It is a good family day out as there is plenty to do. There are daily excursions for the dolphin safari from the marina, it’s not too expensive, and if you don’t see a dolphin, they’ll refund the cost! Allegedly… You can also visit to the Rock Apes, also know as Barbary Apes, the only wild living monkey in Europe. The best ways to see them are either from a cable car (fantastic views), a chauffeured car (plenty of touts offering rides) or a very informative bus tour. A café and look out post on the top is good to explore whilst dodging the apes which move around freely. This trip can also include a visit to St. Michaels Cave - an impressive cave well worth seeing, and particularly so for cooling off during summer months. The military tunnels are also highly recommended. At the cable car you have a choice of what you want included in your ticket, so here you can purchase Dolphin Watching, Apes, Caves, Tunnels etc. and price is adjusted accordingly. Mainly known for its lower prices goods, the shopping is a draw for many people. The Main Street is basically one long road where most of the business on the island takes place. This then branches into Irish Town, which is another shopping area. Cheaper goods may include alcohol, cigarettes, perfume, jewellery, leather goods and much more. There are also the usual high street chain shops such as M&S and BHS for those wanting a taste of home. A mix of architecture from the Portuguese, Spanish, Moorish and British dominates the centre with little churches tucked away down side streets, worth exploring and not possible to see all in one day. Passports are obviously needed to pass border control as you drive across the runway to access the rock. Seeing the Spanish armed police and British helmeted Bobby next to each other makes the journey worthwhile alone, as is the move from everything Spanish to red phone boxes and post office signs - a strange experience. It is very hot in August, so is much more enjoyable out of season. It can also feel very crowded and busy here, as there are so many people and so little land. It has been said that there are 130,000 people living on the rock, and all these are at the base and town area. Flights are from Gatwick via Easyjet for those wanting to fly straight there. The closest airport to Hacienda Guadalupe is Gibralter, and is approximately 20-25 mins drive away. You may have a little wait to get through Spanish and into British border control, so make sure you allow for this. Back to map... |
