Marbella

Marbella, meaning ‘beautiful sea’, is half way between the apartments and Malaga and could be classed, unofficially, as the capital of the Costa del Sol. It’s a cosmopolitan town with luxury and simplicity living side by side, and is a mix of hotels, chi-chi boutiques, yacht harbours, a unique historic environment and a great climate, thanks to the Sierra Blanca mountain range. This brings the rich and famous flocking, and nearby Puerto Banus, the most famous port in the world, is home to over 900 boats. Puerto Banus itself is where the best shopping can be found in terms of ‘names’, Hermes, Cartier, Versace and the huge department store, El Corte Ingles. There’s a casino, numerous bars, bistros and restaurants serving everything from traditional tapas and pizzas to the full works, lobster, caviar and champagne.

The
Orange Square (Plaza De Los Naranjos) is in the centre of the historic old town, and is surrounded by remains of the Arab wall. Other historical sites include Rio Verde Roman Villa and the Guadalmina thermal baths which also date from the Roman times. The Ladrones Tower, built in the Muslim period, is close to the port of Capobino.

Festivities: Holy week varies each year, but it is usually in April. The whole of Andalucia celebrates with day long processions, bullfights and Flamenco.  Feria de San Bernabe is a festival in the fist two weeks of June.  Similar celebratory activities occur. 11th June is a day celebrating when the Christian conquest, and the end of the Moorish occupation. In October there are also celebrations in honour of San Pedro De Alcantara.
