... October half-term and we managed to get away for a few days on our own. It was wonderful to have such lovely weather and temperatures of 25 degrees with blue skies. Being late October it was out of season for the majority of tourists and we had a sunny and relaxed break with miles of quiet beaches. ... ... Read more ...

Ronda

This is a beautiful town steeped in history and with amazing views, several museums and very popular with day trippers. The town is famously divided by El Tajo, a river gorge which separates the medieval and 18th century areas of town. The stone bridge once housed a prison. Ronda is also famous for its bullring, the oldest in Spain.

A couple of hours’ drive finds you at the 18th century gorge and is 100m over the
Rio Guadalevin below. The breathtaking views over the Serrania de Ronda mountains is well worth a visit. This day out appeals to all the family and is well worth the drive. Or take a train there by driving down to Algeciras and travelling for 2 hours on a single track line, you are treated to the most marvellous mountain scenery which would be denied you by road, taking in little villages, dear Victorian stations, and a changing landscape of forests of cork, lakes and waterfalls. Once there, you have three hours before catching the train back. An absolutely lovely day out.

Restaurants hug tightly to the cliff edge and there are plenty to choose from. Shops are also plentiful, as are cobbled streets and little courtyards set amongst the old town. These are filled with gifts, leather goods, artisan craftware and usual town shops. Restaurants in the centre give the opportunity for sitting out and tables and chairs are set up outside in the courtyards and side streets. There is something for everyone from pizza to authentic Spanish cuisine.  Each corner you turn leads to another courtyard or pavement café.

Old town is very picturesque so you can happily drive there, and leave the car in the parking available (mostly underground).
