... October half-term and we managed to get away for a few days on our own. It was wonderful to have such lovely weather and temperatures of 25 degrees with blue skies. Being late October it was out of season for the majority of tourists and we had a sunny and relaxed break with miles of quiet beaches. ... ... Read more ...

‘If you don’t want to loll about by the pool, Spain offers a great mix of traditional sight-seeing – Ronda, Granada, Seville – or people watching in smart settings. There are endless beautiful long and sandy beaches and, er, my pet hate, and my children’s clear favourite, waterparks. Half an hour away is the Bahia Water Park at Algericas. It has lots of different slides and pools and you can sit and sunbathe if you are halfway sensible and don’t fancy killing yourself on the loopy slides. Waterparks aren’t desperately cheap, but you can stay all day, but we’d advise getting their early, not only before the queues build up, but to ensure you get your hands on a rubber ring thing. Another such waterpark is to be found at Torremolinos, at the Aquapark (costs here are 10.80 EUR for adults and 6.80 EUR for children). The Aquapark boasts 30 rides, all of them horrible.

Also at Torremolinos, is an equestrian ballet, “Ritmo a Caballo”. The Andalusians, reputedly among the most proficient horsemen in Europe, hold a weekly show at El Ranchito riding stables. This is La Colina (95 238 3140), and is very professional with explanations in both English and Spanish. But it’s popular and there aren’t many seats, so it’s best to book.

There’s an aquarium, too, near here, Sea Life which is to be found at the entrance of Benalmadena Port. It features a “touch pool,” which is an educational section for young children who are allowed to handle crabs and starfish, as well as see tiny sharks and rays swimming in their egg cases using magnifying glasses.’
